You want to learn as much as you can about taking care of your eyes in all aspects of your life. The more you know about taking proper care of your eyes, the better off you will be in the long run. If you play sports then you'll want to make sure you are knowledgeable on protecting your eyes from all types of damage. Here are some tips on what you should do for your eyes when you are involved in sports:
Wear sunglasses when possible
You should bring sunglasses with you and wear them when you are going to be sitting or standing out in the sun for a period of time. This will help to protect your eyes from the suns harsh rays much like sunscreen helps to protect your skin from those rays. You'll probably need to remove the sunglasses while you are involved in the sport you participate in, but wearing them every chance you can will help with the long-term health and well-being of your eyes.
Don't forgo protective eyewear
If protective eyewear is optional in the sport that you are participating in you want to make sure you choose to wear it. Anytime it is advisable to wear it there is usually a good chance that you can injure your eyes which you will want to avoid having happen at all costs. It's even a good idea to wear the protective eye gear when you are practicing' even if the risk of injury is less it is still there.
Consider getting contacts if you need corrective lenses
If you are in need of corrective lenses and you play sports then you should make sure you get contact lenses. Even if you don't wear contacts normally, wearing them while you are playing sports allows you to wear protective head gear without glasses getting in the way. If the sport that you play doesn't require protective gear wearing contact lenses is a good idea because you won't have to worry about your glasses getting knocked off or falling off and getting broken. Also, glasses can get steamed up on a hot day when you are sweating, so contact lenses will help you out in this respect as well.
Go to the optometrist right away if there is the chance you have injured your eye
If you have injured your eye at all then you should go in to see your optometrist to make sure the injury isn't serious enough to require treatment. Also, if it does need treatment then you can get it right away to avoid further damage.
Use supplements to avoid dry eyes
When you are playing a sport outside you can end up with dry eyes, especially if it is windy outside or if you have to focus your stare in one area for a long period of time. Vitamin A supplements can really help you to avoid dry eyes. It also offers you the added benefit of protecting the surface of your eye known as your cornea and this can help if you do end up doing something that can injure it.
